Re-using citation is error prone and heavy duplication. Harnessing the knowledge across different language Wikipedias and making use of foreign language sources are difficult to find and review for quality/use.
WikiCite/Shared Citations is a bold project that would essentially DOI for all citations. It would enable researchers and editors to find related articles and also split the work of verifying claims inside text versus improving/featuring metadata about each source, while also reducing duplication significantly. Malicious edits to widely shared citations would have similar ramifications as widely used Templates, but it would also make detection of vandalism easier to mitigate too.
