Caleb Mir was a male Human in the late 32nd century. After a difficult childhood separated from his mother, Anisha Mir, he was invited to enroll in Starfleet Academy as a cadet in the 3190s.
Childhood[]
Caleb and Anisha struggled to survive and feed themselves in the 3170s amid the resource scarcity following The Burn. On the Pikaru Outpost, with his teddy bear Scrap in hand, he dreamed of the moons in the sky and eventually having a ship so he and his mother could make a new home on Earth.
Anisha had to make difficult decisions to even be able to feed Caleb, including having gotten involved with criminal Nus Braka, which led to her being imprisoned by Starfleet Captain Nahla Ake and removed as Caleb's guardian. Caleb's last memories of his mother included a code to an encrypted method of finding each other, a call to remember their moon – Ishaani, and a warning not to trust the Federation.
On that, Caleb quickly escaped Captain Ake's custody, leading to an adolescence marked by an extensive criminal record, including charges of petty theft at 8, destruction of property at 12, vandalism at 14, illegal trading at 18, transport of illegal materials at 20. By 21, he had recorded warrants with the Federation, the Ferengi Alliance, Orion, Trill, Andoria, Cardassia and the Ckaptir. (SA: "Kids These Days")
Starfleet career[]
Fifteen years after Ake presided over the sentencing of his mother for being involved in the death of a Starfleet officer, the chancellor found Mir imprisoned by Torothans after he hacked their Imperial Security System. (SA: "Kids These Days")
Starfleet Academy[]
He ended up sharing a room with Darem Reymi and Ocam Sadal. (SA: "Beta Test")
Caleb participated in a joint training exercise with the War College to the USS Miyazaki. His use of programmable matter to fix the life support system quickly -- which was not against the rules -- impressed Lieutenant Commander Tomov. However, the team was attacked by Furies, forcing the rival cadets to work together to survive. Caleb and Vulcan War College cadet B'Avi were able to bring the ship's singularity drive online using instructions that Tarima Sadal sent to Caleb through the deep connection that they had established with each other. When the Furies attacked, B'Avi was killed saving Caleb's life before Tarima used her powers to kill all of the Furies, leaving her comatose. (SA: "Come, Let's Away")
Caleb spent the next month struggling to send a message to Tarima who was recovering on Betazed. Caleb spent his All-Worlds Day break with Genesis Lythe on campus, although they both got into trouble when they were caught on the bridge of the USS Athena. Following some advice from Genesis, Caleb finally sent a message to Tarima. (SA: "Ko'Zeine")
At the end of the academic year, Caleb took part in the r'uustai ritual with his friends to join the House of Kraag as a chosen family, although Caleb chose not to drink with them. Later, with the help of a suggestion from SAM, Caleb was finally able to access nearly two years worth of messages from his mother and discovered that she was hiding on Ukeck, a planet about to be annexed by the Venari Ral. With the Federation pulling back due to the threat of Nus Braka's Omega-47 mines, Caleb stole a shuttle accompanied, at various degrees of reluctance, by SAM, Darem and Genesis. As the others went to find parts to repair their damaged shuttle, Caleb finally reunited with his mother in the Ukeck Market. Caleb decided to leave Starfleet Academy to be with Anisha, harshly lashing out at his friends and causing Genesis to accuse him of being unable to move past being a scared little kid. However, when the others were about to be killed by Venari Ral soldiers, Caleb risked his own life to go back for them, finally admitting that he was a part of Starfleet to Anisha. The group was rescued by Nahla Ake, Jett Reno and the Doctor who had taken the Athena after them. However, their escape was cut off by the discovery that the Venari Ral had walled off Federation space with Omega-47 mines. (SA: "300th Night")
Following a Venari Ral attack, the cadets were left in the Athena's heavily damaged saucer section with Reno and the Doctor while Nus Braka abducted Ake and Anisha. Caleb developed a program to hack Braka's subspace control signal for the mines and helped Reno to repair the ship's damaged warp core. While they worked, Reno pointed out how far Caleb had come during his time at the Academy. At Caleb's suggestion, Tarima used her powers and Caleb's connection to his mother to locate Braka. To buy time for the others to shut down the mines, Caleb boarded the captured Sato Atrium and opened up to his mother about the home and family that he had found in Starfleet. Caleb and Ake revealed to Braka that the Federation hadn't destroyed the mining colony that Braka had grown up on, but rather Braka's own father, turning the situation in their favor. As Braka was taken into custody, Caleb mockingly returned the taunting words that the pirate had said to him years before.
Afterwards, much to Caleb's dismay, he and his friends were forced to attend a private reception celebrating their heroism with President Laira Rillak. Caleb and Anisha planned to spend the summer traveling with their first stop being fulfilling their dream of seeing Earth together after which Caleb was going to return to Starfleet Academy for his second year. Anisha expressed her pride in her son and Anisha assured Caleb that he would always have a home with her too. (SA: "Rubincon")
Appendices[]
Starfleet and Personal Goals[]
- Caleb's overarching goal is to find his mother, of which he picks up clues to where she had gone, and had escaped from (following "Beta Test"). He's developed a close rapport with Tarima Sadal, a member of the Betazoid's Youth Movement and the daughter of President Emrin Sadal (First House of Betazoid). He went out of his way after souring relations to right the scales with Tarima and re-earn her trust, which helped to re-cement relations with the Betazoids and played a part in Betazed returning to the Federation (circa 3190/3191).
