SUMO2

SUMO2

A gene on chromosome 17q25.1 that encodes a broadly expressed ubiquitin-like protein, which can be covalently attached to proteins as a monomer or a lysine-linked polymer. This post-translational modification on lysine residues of protein (sumolyation) plays a crucial role in a number of cellular processes, including nuclear transport, DNA replication and repair, mitosis and signal transduction. SUMO2 interacts with PELP1, SAE2 and USP25; it is activated when its precursor form is cleaved by SENP1 or SENP2.

A comprehensive analysis led scientists to two specific genes, Chaf1a and Sumo2, that are the key factors linked to proviral silencing.
Further studies on the roles of Chaf1a and Sumo2 in stem cell proviral silencing can shed new light on stem cells and virus biology that could translate into valuable therapeutic and diagnostic applications.
