Foetal Alcohol Syndrome is at the top end of the Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (
FASD) scale, and while not many people suffer from extreme cases of FAS, many will still suffer behaviourally from their mothers' consumption of alcohol while they were in the womb.
We both have been extensively involved in prevention research in the areas of adolescents and substance abuse and women who are at risk of having a child with
FASDs.
As the author, I had to acknowledge that implementing effective or evidence-based strategies for the prevention of
FASD is a good deal more complex than I had originally assumed.
Eight questions, three of which were open-ended, asked respondents to detail courses with
FASD content and faculty trained to teach
FASD content.
While many themes emerged, the focus of this paper centres on applying Hacking's looping effect to the construction of two distinct but related psy-identities--the
FASD child and adult.

Foetal alcohol spectrum disorders (

The Chief Medical Officer for Scotland, Catherine Calderwood, said: "Early diagnosis of
FASD can make a huge difference in a child's life, and these guidelines will help raise awareness of the condition among healthcare professionals.
Turchi and her colleagues released the
FASD clinical report with "strategies to support families who are interacting with early intervention services, the educational system, the behavioral and / or mental health system, other community resources, and the transition to adult-oriented heath care systems when appropriate." They noted the prevalence of
FASD is increasing, with 1 in 10 pregnant women using alcohol within the past 30 days and 1 in 33 pregnant women reporting binge drinking in the past 30 days.
Management of children with
FASD is individual, as symptoms for each child will uniquely present not just in terms of physical issues such as growth or congenital defects affecting the heart, eyes, kidneys, or bones, but also as developmental, cognitive, and behavioral problems.
