About LA County<\/h3>

Los Angeles County, one of California’s original 27 counties, was established on Feb. 18, 1850. It is one of the nation’s largest counties with 4,084 square miles, and has the largest population of any county in the nation – nearly 10 million residents who account for approximately 27 percent of California’s population. County Seal<\/span><\/span><\/h2><\/div>[vc_column_text]The Native American woman represents the early inhabitants of the Los Angeles Basin, including the area we now call Los Angeles County.<\/p>\n

She stands on the shore of the Pacific Ocean with the San Gabriel Mountains in the background.<\/p>\n

The engineering instruments\u2039the triangle and the caliper\u2039relate to the industrial construction complex of the County and Los Angeles vital contribution to the conquest of space.<\/p>\n

The Spanish galleon is the San Salvador, which Cabrillo sailed into San Pedro Harbor October 8, 1542.<\/p>\n

The tuna represents the fishing industry of Los Angeles County, and the championship cow, Pearlette, represents the dairy industry.<\/p>\n

The Hollywood Bowl indicates the cultural activities, while the two stars represent the motion picture and television industries.<\/p>\n

Mission San Gabriel, the first in Los Angeles County, represents the historic role of the missions in the settlement of the Los Angeles region.<\/p>\n

The words \u201cCounty of Los Angeles, California\u201d surround the seal.<\/p>\n

(The County seal was designed by former Supervisor Kenneth Hahn, drawn by Millard Sheets, and adopted by the Board of Supervisors January 2, 1957 effective March 1, 1957. “Seventy-Six Cities” is the Official Song of Los Angeles County.<\/p>\n

The song was composed by brothers Steve and Paul Colwell as they were on their way to Southern California by train. It was played and sung for the first time by the cast of “Sing-Out ’65” at a meeting of the Board of Supervisors on Sept. 14, 1965.<\/p>\n

The Board members “were so impressed by the song,” according to then-Board Clerk Gordon T. Nesvig<\/a>, that they unanimously adopted a motion by Supervisor Warren M. Dorn to declare it the County’s official song.<\/p>\n

Since the adoption of the official song, the County has grown from 76 cities to 88 cities and the population has increased from seven million to more than 10 million.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>

Official Flag<\/span><\/span><\/h2>

The official flag of the County of Los Angeles is blue, green and gold.\n\n\nThe blue signifies clear skies. The green border is to keep Los Angeles beautiful and the gold lettering \u201cCounty of Los Angeles\u201d stands for the land of opportunity for everyone since gold was discovered in California The seal is the official seal of the County of Los Angeles.\n\n\nThe flag was approved on October 17, 1967 by the Board of Supervisors and flew for the first time in front of the County Courthouse on March 28, 1968. (Former Supervisor Kenneth Hahn designed the flag. It was drawn by Alan Ferber, chief of the County’s graphic arts section.)
