This is a project from a Media Design class taught by Kathy Maxwell. Here we created a mock-design using the information from Penumbra’s This Bitter Earth. Using the the script and set design information (from Maruti Evans), we also picked projectors, placements, and subsequent system schematics.
Image 1: First page of concept notes for the design. I felt it was important to write the director’s notes and have a running list of locations, since it is very integral to the story; like “time stamps.”
Image 2: Conceptual fonts for locations. I wanted a mix of rigid/city-like fonts, but could also offer some personality or dream-like design. Since the time stamps were important for audience orientation to the story, I also wanted to make sure they were readable from a large distance.
Image 3: A mock-system schematic consisting of two projection systems linked together via network switch. This would require programming on two separate Macs and linking them together. Which isn’t ideal for a tech process, but made the most sense given the specifications of the MacBooks provided and five projectors. I also made sure to label each adaptor and what cables needed.
Image 4: This is the projector plot with all five projectors; 3 InFocus projectors for smaller screens/short throws, a Christie Roadster for a large stage throw, and a Eiki Zoom for a side wall projection. As it is labeled, the positions were mostly flexible depending on lighting’s positions; however, we did not dive too deep into that thought experiment for this project. Here is a selection of projects from a Sound Design course taught by Montana Johnson. In the class, we focused on the sound designers process. I have generated a full cue sheet for and mock-design presentation for Rhinoceros and two mock-system schematics for A Raisin in the Sun and The Secret Garden.
