John Ridgely

John Ridgely (Chicago, 6 settembre 1909 – New York, 18 gennaio 1968) è stato un attore statunitense. Noto soprattutto per i suoi ruoli secondari durante l'età d'oro di Hollywood.

Biografia

Ridgely nacque a Chicago nell'Illinois col nome di John Huntington Rea, figlio di John Ridgely Rea. Compì la scuola elementare a Hinsdale, nell'Illinois, e frequentò la Kemper Military School a Boonville, nel Missouri.^[1] Studiò poi alla Stanford University prima di esordire nel cinema.^[2] Attore caratterista versatile, accumulò oltre 175 crediti cinematografici.^[2] Apparve in numerosi film della Warner Bros. negli anni trenta e quaranta, interpretando con uguale abilità ruoli da duro, poliziotti, medici, autisti e impiegati. Il suo ruolo più celebre fu quello del gangster ricattatore Eddie Mars nel film noir Il grande sonno (1946) di Howard Hawks, accanto a Humphrey Bogart e Lauren Bacall. Ebbe anche un ruolo di rilievo come paziente cardiopatico nel film noir Smarrimento (1947). I suoi ruoli più importanti furono tuttavia la parte da protagonista — l'unica della sua carriera — come capitano bombardiere nel film bellico Arcipelago in fiamme (1943) di Howard Hawks, e l'interpretazione del pilota da caccia realmente esistito Tex Hill in Le tigri della Birmania (1945). Dopo aver lavorato come libero professionista dal 1948, Ridgely continuò a interpretare ruoli generici fino al suo ritiro dal cinema nel 1953. Lavorò poi in produzioni di teatro estivo e in televisione fino alla morte per attacco cardiaco all'età di 58 anni, nel 1968.^[3] Sposò Virginia Robinson nel 1940 e il matrimonio durò fino alla sua morte. Ebbero un figlio.
