With the intention of completely defeating or destroying someone or something. With his opponent on the ropes, Thompson looks like he's getting ready to move in for the kill. Once the hit man spotted his target, he closed in for the kill. The game was tied going into the bottom of the eighth inning, and that's when the home team went in for the kill, scoring six runs.
