To begin to not have enough of something; to begin to have a shortage of something. I've gone short of money this week, so can we go out to dinner next week instead? I know we've gone short of food, that's why I'm stopping at the store after work. We won't go short of envelopes for a while—there's four unopened boxes here in the supply close.
