heavyweight

1. noun The heaviest weight class of boxers. A: "In professional boxing, how much does a heavyweight actually have to weigh?" B: "More than 175 pounds." After training for the boxing film, the actor has claimed that he wants to go a few rounds with a "real" heavyweight next. That heavyweight retired five years ago, and I still think he could win the championship if he ever put the gloves back on!
2. noun, slang A very important person. I'm not a heavyweight on those kinds of issues—you should really ask Stewart about it. He's known as something of a heavyweight in the fashion industry. Our lobbyists have been pressuring some of the political heavyweights to alter the wording of the legislation.
3. adjective Participating in the heaviest weight-class of boxers. A: "How much does a professional heavyweight boxer actually have to weigh?" B: "More than 175 pounds." You want to take on the heavyweight champion of the world? I think you need to get your head examined! Many suspected the fight of being a setup, considering how easily the former heavyweight champion went down in the second round.
4. adjective, slang Very important. I'm not a heavyweight person on those kinds of issues, so you should really ask your boss about it. The superintendent is a heavyweight leader in the school district, so you need to establish a good relationship with her. OK, who are the heavyweight executives around here, and how can I impress them?
