Initiative Overview

Addressing deep-rooted inequalities can help ensure we all thrive in flourishing communities and have control over the decisions shaping our lives and futures. Hewlett’s racial justice work promotes equal opportunity for all by addressing systemic inequalities across issue areas and in society. In 2024, the initiative awarded $18.4M through 20 grants.

Strengthen the field of racial and economic justice and enhance efforts across our other programs to advance a vision of a more inclusive society where all people, communities, and the planet thrive.
Identify and promote practices within the Hewlett Foundation, such as awarding multiyear flexible funding and rooting out implicit bias, to improve our philanthropy and build a culture of belonging.

Strategies

Racial Justice

The Racial Justice Initiative is a 10-year, time-bound grantmaking effort. It seeks to better promote equal opportunity for all, working to advance racial justice across our program areas, from environment to philanthropy. We identify and promote philanthropic practices that ensure all voices, particularly those that have historically been excluded, are represented in our work and can make our systems fairer for all, bringing us closer to a future with flourishing communities, secure jobs, greater freedom, and a thriving multiracial democracy.

We work internally to identify practices, programs, and grantmaking that promote equal opportunity for all. We directly support organizations working toward a more just world, and we partner with an advisory council of racial justice experts to enhance effectiveness, connect with impacted communities, and ensure accountability.
