Jorge Mateo: Breaking News

Mateo will start at designated hitter and bat seventh in Sunday's game against the Reds. Mateo will stick in the lineup for a fifth straight game Sunday, this time handling a non-defensive role after his prior three starts came at shortstop. Atlanta could continue to move forward with Mateo as its primary option at shortstop over Ha-Seong Kim, who is in the lineup Sunday but may be ticketed for a part-time role after slashing just .095/.191/.095 over his 47 plate appearances since being activated from the injured list May 11. Mateo, meanwhile, has been much more productive when called upon this season, generating an .845 OPS while going 7-for-8 on stolen-base attempts in 81 plate appearances. With his playing time on the rise, Mateo could be worth a look for fantasy managers looking to make up ground in the steals category in particular.

Mateo went 2-for-4 with a walk, a double, a run scored and an RBI in Thursday's win over the Red Sox. Getting the start at shortstop and batting seventh, Mateo put together his second straight multi-hit performance. The veteran utility player has seen his usage shrink since Ha-Seong Kim came off the IL in mid-May, but he's been surprisingly productive when given the opportunity. Through 41 plate appearances this month, Mateo's slashing .368/.415/.526 with three doubles, a homer, four steals, four RBI and nine runs.

Mateo (thumb) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored in Saturday's 7-2 win over the Dodgers. Mateo was in the lineup for the first time since Tuesday, as he missed the last two games due to a jammed thumb. He appeared in both of those contests as a pinch runner. Now presumably healthy after playing all nine innings Saturday, Mateo figures to regain a short-term starting role at shortstop until Ha-Seong Kim (finger) is ready to return from his rehab assignment, though Mauricio Dubon could also see some action there. Mateo has played well so far this season, batting .288 with a .757 OPS, two home runs, five RBI, 14 runs scored and four stolen bases over 54 plate appearances.
