What is country risk and why it matters?

Political and economic changes can affect profitability, investment decisions, and payment behaviour in international trade.

These cross-border risks, known as country risk, include factors such as political instability, conflict, regulatory changes, and currency volatility, all of which can impact a company’s ability and willingness to meet its financial obligations.

Atradius assesses these risks using its proprietary STAR methodology (Sovereign Transfer and Arbitrary Risk) to provide a clear and consistent view across markets.

Under our political risk cover, we insure against a defined subset of these country risk events.

This information is produced and updated quarterly by the Atradius Economic Research team, with additional input from underwriters in each market.

How does Atradius assess political and economic country risk?

Atradius assesses political and economic country risk using its proprietary STAR methodology, which translates complex risk factors into a clear, comparable rating across countries.

The STAR model supports the evaluation of cross-border payment exposure by combining political, economic, and financial risk indicators into a single structured framework.

What does the STAR rating indicate about country risk?

The STAR rating is a summary measure of political risk relevant to the Atradius insurance contract and explicitly targets the impact on public or private entities with cross-border payment obligations.

The interactive Risk Map shows a STAR country’s risk score ranging from ‘Low Risk’ to ‘High Risk’, where 1 represents the lowest risk and 9 the highest, alongside key indicators such as real GDP, inflation, fiscal balance, and ESG data.
