Bopomofo was created in the early 20th century as a phonetic system to assist in teaching Mandarin Chinese, especially to children. Consisting of 37 characters and 4 tone marks, it is still widely used in Taiwan for educational purposes, dictionary notation, and as a computer input method for Chinese characters.
