O Consello Nacional Métis (MNC) é a organización política que representa a Nación Métis a nivel nacional e internacional. En 2002, o Consello definiu como métis: "unha persoa que se identifica como métis, distinta doutros pobos indíxenas, de ascendencia histórica da nación métis e que é aceptada pola propia nación".[5]

Alberta é a única provincia canadense cun territorio métis recoñecido: os oito asentamentos Métis, cunha poboación de aproximadamente 5.000 habitantes en 5.100 km2[9] e as novas terras métis preto de Fort McKay, compradas ao Goberno de Alberta en 2017.[10]
A palabra métis é orixinalmente un termo francés para describir unha 'persoa de filiación mixta' e deriva da palabra latina mixticius, de mixtus, 'mesturado'.[11][12][13] É un termo afín ao mestizo.
