Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.
No, it's not related to a specific problem or bug with the application. SumatraPDF works as expected.
Describe the solution you'd like
I have been searching everywhere for a reliable way to show "correct" thumbnails for EPS and AI files in Windows Explorer on Windows 11 with no success.
Important Points:
- SumatraPDF opens EPS and AI files with perfect high resolution previews. See the following screenshot of an EPS file in my stock assets library:
-
The image is rendered beautifully in high resolution and looks great. The same occurs with AI files.
-
After testing multiple image viewers, I've found that Sumatra renders EPS and AI files extremely well. I'm assuming Sumatra uses Ghostscript under the hood to render these vector files. I have Ghostscript installed and added to my system PATH environment variable. The path of my installed version of Ghostscript is: C:\Program Files\gs\gs10.07.1\bin\gswin64.exe
-
Unfortunately, when previewing the thumbnails for any EPS or AI file in Windows Explorer, most of the time the preview is inaccurate. I've selected the same image from above in explorer in the following screenshot:
- Notice that the explorer preview is not "correct". It shows the entire canvas of the original file that was used to export the EPS file instead of the actual vector data. This is likely an embedded preview of the master source file from whatever graphics application was used to create the EPS file (Like Illustrator), and not generated dynamically by Ghostscript. The identical behavior occurs with AI files (
.ai).
Desired Solution
I'm guessing that SumatraPDF doesn't actually install a Thumbnail Handler shell extension for any file type, and maybe the inclusion of one would be outside the scope of this application's goals. However, I would like to request one anyway in the off-chance that such an addition would be considered.
There are no existing thumbnail shell extensions that handle these two file formats well, and I think adding one would be a great feature addition to this application.
Describe alternatives you've considered
- I've tried SageThumbs with no success.
- I've tried MysticThumbs in the past, but my experience with MysticThumbs has been kind of frustrating. It registers a huge amount file formats and adds other visual garnish by default (shadows, borders, etc.) and feels extremely bloated for what could be a much more minimal solution.
- I've tried Ardfry's PSD Codec, and it also does not produce correct thumbnails. It defaults to the embedded thumbnail and does not create a thumbnail of the actual vector data.
- I've tried FastPictureViewer Codec Pack, and despite its marketing ("The Codec Pack creates thumbnails for Google SketchUp, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, EPS and Adobe PDF-XMP."), I'm still getting only the embedded preview in my thumbnails.
Additional context
I think a well executed Thumbnail Handler shell extension for various vector image formats (specifically EPS and AI) would add significant value to this project for graphic artists that work with a lot of vector files on a regular basis.
I'm hoping this could be considered moving forward.
Any additional information on this topic would be extremely welcome as well.
Thank you for any consideration, and thank you for creating such a streamlined application. SumatraPDF is a marvel.
