incorrect target location for PDF hyperlinks into other PDF #5642

Description

Summary
PDF links from one local PDF file to another PDF do not go to the right position or page of the target file. Sumatra successfully opens the target PDF, but it does not go to the right page or position there. Instead it seems, it always goes to page 1. I would rather expect that it would jump to the right page or position in the target PDF.

Versions

  • I am reporting this for the current official release version 3.6.1 (64bit).
  • Pre-release version 3.7.18446 (64bit) has the same problem.
  • The old version 3.5.2 (64bit) works well without problems and jumps to the right position.
  • Also other PDF readers like Adobe Acrobat work well.

Reproduce
The issue is easily reproduced with both attached PDF files.
source.pdf and target.pdf

  1. Open the source.pdf.
  2. Click the link to "Target Chapter".
  3. It will open target.pdf.
  4. But it seems always starts at page 1, instead of the right target page 2.

History
In 2022 I report a similar issue #2635 for Sumatra 3.4.3.
It was resolved in 2023.

Background
This link is a link in source.pdf is a link to a named article in the target.pdf. I created it with LaTeX cross-referencing from one PDF to another PDF using the XR-Hyper LaTeX package. If you inspect that link in Adobe Acrobat it looks as follows.
Adobe Acrobat
You can see that it is not a link to a specific page, rather to a specific position (article) named "Target Chapter". This is aiming the big headline "Target Chapter" in target.pdf page 2.

Cosmetic
Maybe this is off-topic, but in above Adobe screen-shot one can see that this link has a rectangle around it. Also in "Edge" one can see it. But Sumatra does not display this rectangle. However, this is just a tiny minor thing. What is really important is that the hyperlink works, of course.
