The tenth studio album by English rock band Genesis was released in March in 1980. It was the first album by the group to reach No. 1 in the UK charts and featured the singles “Turn It On Again”, “Duchess”, and “Misunderstanding”.
Duke marked a major turning point for the group. While they’d already begun their shift to more radio-friendly material with …And Then There Were Three… in 1978, Duke threw the band headfirst into the arena rock style that would define their subsequent output, marking the first time that Genesis were able to successfully generate major hit singles. Despite this, there are still traces of their early progressive rock modes on the record. It was, in effect, one of their last LPs to not consist entirely of pop or pop-influenced pieces.
