I was really surprised. I was so surprised because everybody was raving, being like ‘'Oh my god, this song is so freaky and nasty’‘. Even when I hear it, this song isn’t so nasty and freaky to me because I grew up listening to freaky-ass rappers and I feel like this is very mild compared to them. I don’t know, now a days people want to rave about everything. I think it’s because people have been wanting me and Megan to collab and they didn’t expect the record to be so freaky. Now a days people are a lot more open about their sexuality but when WAP came out, the people that were critizing it the most and saying it was nasty and freaky weren’t even religious people. It was mainly republicans. Big republicans, not senates, it was literally the motherfuckers that got blue checks on Twitter, the big influencers. And I think it was because I used to endorse Bernie and then Joe Biden. They were just trying to figure a way out to pick on me and be like ’‘Joe Biden, is this the girl you were doing an interview with? The girk that’s talking ab out WAP? That’s what you want America to be influenced by?’‘ It’s like, bro, come on now.

Some people just don’t know what to do when a woman is in control and taking ownership of her own body. I feel like for a long time men felt like they owned sex and now women are saying, “Hey, this is for me. I want pleasure. This is how I want it or don’t want it,” it freaks men the hell out. “The ‘WAP’ video I was really, really excited to be a part of, just because I feel like we’re in a time in music where women – and Black women – are really on top, which is something I feel like we haven’t seen in a very, very long time. Where I come from, we were all about female empowerment. The fact that I could be a part of such a special moment embracing our sexuality, in which I definitely think there’s a double standard, [was exciting] to be a part of it.
