The Elyasion Story Incident refers to the cancellation of a web novel, Elyasion Story in 2004 due to its creator 안소연 (Ahn So-yeon), a devout Protestant, disliking boys' love (BL) derivative works based on her novel. After she was made aware of such works, she ceased working on her novel, though the novel had been in hiatus for several years before this point.
Elyasion Story is a fantasy series that was originally published online in 1998 before becoming available in print in 2000. In total, 11 volumes of the series were published, constituting part 1. Although a part 2 was planned, it was cancelled due to the author struggling with her mental health.
The story had a BL following despite the story containing heavy elements more suitable for HL (F/M). These works were shared privately until an incident occurred where one was uploaded to the author's bulletin board site hosted on HiTel. Later, the author requested fans not send her such works as a notice to the board. Despite the notice, BL works were sometimes published to the board only to soon be deleted by the author. According to Namuwiki article on this subject, some fans went so far as to send her BL works to her personal email address.[citation needed]
The notice contained homophobia and was widely mocked on the internet at the time, such as on egloos blogs.[1] The author's homepage on her site was soon flooded with criticism for the homophobia from those who were not familiar Elyasion Story. This caused her to go into hiding, siting her health as the reason.
At the time, it was not known Ahn So-yeon struggled with mental illness. Public opinion was later changed somewhat when her brother explained more about the situation on her site.[2] The story entered hiatus afterwards.
A small fan-continuation for Elyasion Story was announced in 2007.
