Ethics Question
I am not a programmer but I work in IT for a very big company you have heard of.

My current work has been outsourced. I will still have a job with my company but am worried that in another year or so that one will go too. Right now I am training the people who will take on my role. They live in South America.

I have certain tricks, and programs I use which are invaluable in keeping up with my workload, the workload that is being moved to South America. I am inclined to NOT share these tools for a couple reasons. I don't want to support them for this group after I move on to a new job. More importantly, I am not especially incented to see them succeed. I mean, for my company's sake I am, but for my own, I'd rather not.

Any thoughts on the ethics here?

open source medical software?
just out of curiosity, does anyone know of any open source medical software (ie the stuff they use in hospitals to keep people alive, diagnose things, dispence medicine, keep patient records, et al)?

X-posted... in a lot of places.

VEGA
Greetings.
My name is Becky and I'm developing a software application that has to do with ethical consumerism and vege(taria)nism. It's called V.E.G.A.: the Vegetarian Ethical Guideline Archive. It's a work in progress, and I'm looking for community support. Here's some information about it:

VEGA is a project I developed in my Fall 2004 semester in the Design and Technology program at Parsons School of Design in New York City. I was motivated to use my interests in programming and ethical consumerism to create something substantial. My theory is that the consolidation of and exposure to ethically questionable content/production of consumer products will help consumers to make educated buying decisions. Using Java/Swing, I was able to create this prototype standalone application.

The underlying question about which I am trying to raise issue: Is ignorance from the truth an escape from it?

Please visit the project's website for more information, and to download the protoype.

Welcome to this new community! The inspriation for this community has come from my interest in ethical consumerism and computer programming. I'm working on a program I call VEGA which takes in UPCs of consumer products and returns information about their animal ingredients and info about the ethics of the company that makes the product (their environmental practices, labor/trade policies, etc.). The in-progress project site is listed as this community's weblink. I'd like to harbor conversation on how programming can change the world for the better.
