Sesotho
Sesotho Wikipedia is growing, thanks to its small strong and resilient community. I am glad the deletion of Sesotho Wikipedia was opposed in 2010. Now here is the challenge as my interest is closely tied to an ongoing challenge within the Sesotho Wikipedia community—particularly the complex relationship between Sesotho and French linguistic influences, and the two differing orthographies used in South Africa and Lesotho. It was the Paris Missionary Society who first wrote Sesotho as a language in 1833. Lesotho still uses the system inspired by the French missionaries' scholarship, while South Africa utilizes a later, standardized, and more phonetic orthography. While the language is similar, these spelling differences create significant reading discrepancies.
This continues to create confusion for both readers and contributors, affecting content quality, editor retention, and the overall usability of the Wikipedia Sesotho platform. In light of this, I would like assistance in requesting a potential solution—specifically, exploring the establishment of two Sesotho Wikipedias: one for South Africa and one for Lesotho.
Addressing this matter is especially urgent ahead of our planned workshops in Lesotho with the Limkonkwing University of Creative Technology. Lesotho as a country also seem to be left of Wikipedia, there is an urgent need to reach out and impart skills and knowledege to Lesotho communities.
If left unresolved, the orthographic inconsistencies may lead to long-term challenges that will require significant time and resources to correct.
Additionally, I believe it is important to identify and support Sesotho-speaking administrators from both South Africa and Lesotho, who can help guide the development, moderation, and sustainability of these platforms.
