Presbyopia

diminution of the power of accommodation of the eye due to advancing years. Presbyopia occurs as a result of sclerosing of the crystalline lens, which is unable to increase its curvature to the limit when there is a maximum tension (accommodation); the result is that its refractive power decreases, and the ability to see objects close to the eye is impaired.

Presbyopia begins at age 40 to 45 when eye refraction is normal. When myopia is present, it begins later, and with hyperopia, it comes on earlier. Treatment consists in appropriate selection of glasses for reading and close work. Persons 40 to 45 years of age with normal refraction need a plus lens of 1.0 to 1.5 diopters for reading at a distance of 33 cm. Every five years the refractive power of the lens is increased by 0.5 to 1 diopter. Corresponding corrections in the lens power are made for myopia and hyperopia.

Order what you like--my favorites are the various ghost-ring rear apertures paired with a sleek, square-topped post-type front sight--and spend a Saturday afternoon carefully replacing the old sights. Don't hesitate to knock out the rear barrel sight and replace it with a dovetail filler; you'll find a less-obstructed field of view with it gone.
Uncle G laughed then, but the group had gone quiet, seeing old sights, old fights inside their eyes ...
Buy or borrow a sight pusher--Brownells (www.brownells.com) sells some great ones--or use a drift and hammer to carefully push the old sights out of their dovetail slots and push in the TFOs.
Even though the barrel had some pitting and those old sights were made for very young eyes, I found I could keep all shots on the head of a standard silhouette target at 50 yards, all shots in the body at 100 yards, and at 200 yards I could keep an adversary pinned down until someone showed up who could really shoot.
Her story wove threads of old sights and sounds, such as the signaling of school cancellation by illuminating the street lamps.
