Caghan Kizil's group at the Center for Regenerative Therapies at TU Dresden (CRTD), has discovered that failure of the so-called
glial cells in the brain triggers the epileptic seizures.
But all of the subjects showed a reduced response to mechanical pain when the
glial complex was turned off.
While
glial cells help develop and protect neuron function, too many glia cells disturb connectivity between neurons.
They were surprised to find that the cells carrying CD34 turn into
glial cells.
"In contrast," he adds, "
glial cells, which gather around damaged brain tissue, can proliferate after brain injury." In their study paper, he and his team explain how
glial cells form scars that protect the neurons from further injury
Researchers observed greater
glial cell activation in the brains of fibromyalgia patients compared with people who did not have fibromyalgia.
GFAP, first described by Amico Bignami [2] is an intracytoplasmic intermediate filament protein specific for the cytoskeleton of
glial cells.
The differential diagnoses primarily include lymphovascular malformations, encephalocele, and teratomas;
glial heterotopias can be differentiated from other uncommon congenital pharyngeal masses in children with the guidance of radiologic and especially histopathologic examinations.
These are messenger substances produced by the body that act as a kind of brake signal: They prevent the inflammatory activity of the
glial cells," explained researcher Andras Bilkei-Gorzo.
The researchers found that myelin basic protein and
glial fibrillary acidic protein levels were elevated at baseline and through consolidation.
