A beam which supports the common joists of a wood floor above and the ceiling joists below; commonly, joins two vertical posts.

For such an assumed level of loads, calculations were made for the deck plate as if it were a flat multi-span plate supported on steel binding joists, which are the non-deformable supports for the plate.
