Standing Barrage
a type of fire by ground artillery, used to repulse attacks and counterattacks by enemy infantry and tanks.
Standing barrage involves creating a fire curtain of great density on predetermined lines visible from an observation post. Preparations are made in advance, and firing is begun on a set signal and is carried on by an artillery battery or battalion using a single sight setting for a predetermined time and planned mode of fire. The standing barrage was used extensively during the Great Patriotic War of 1941–15.
