Sijo

a genre of medieval Korean poetry, a short three-line poem.

Each line of the sijo is divided into two hemistichs, each consisting of two feet with the exception of the fifth, which generally contains three feet. The foot of the sijo is usually a semantic unit. Structurally, the sijo follows the traditions of the hyangga. The sijos were sung; in anthologies they were usually arranged according to the type of melody to which they were performed.

Originating during the second half of the 14th century, the sijo flourished from the 16th through the 18th century and was still quite widespread in the literature of the first half of the 20th century. The most famous authors of the sijo were Yun Son-do, Pak In-no, Chong Chol, and Kim ChongTaek.
