Abbot of the imperial abbey of Castellio (later moved to
Saint-Mihiel, near Verdun) and an envoy of both Charlemagne and Louis the Pious, he appears to have been closely associated with the efforts of Benedict of Aniane to reform monasticism in the Empire.
Born in Luray, Virginia (December 12, 1892); graduated from Virginia Military Institute (1915), and took an infantry commission (1916); served with the 4th Division in France (June 1918-1919); fighting at Aisne-Marne (July 18-August 5),
Saint-Mihiel (September 12-16) and in the Meuse-Argonne (September 26-November 11); attended the Infantry School at Fort Benning, Georgia (1923-1924), then taught there (1924-1928); graduated from the Command and General Staff School (1930) and from the Army War College (1934); served with 45th Infantry in the Philippines (1930-1933), and was later attached to the General Staff in Washington, D.C.
