Palas
(also pelas), a pileless, reversible, handwoven carpet. A plain weave, with or without clearances, is used. The use of clearances resultsin crisp geometric ornamentation or a picturesque foliage design. In the USSR palasy are woven in the Ukraine, Moldavia, the Caucasus, and Middle Asia. Such rugs are also produced in Bulgaria, India, Iran, Rumania, and Turkey.
