Hassi Messaoud

 

a settlement in Algeria, in Djelfa Wilaya. Population, approximately 10,000 (1968). Hassi Messaoud is the center of a major oil field that was discovered in 1956 in the Algerian Sahara. In 1975 the field produced 27 million tons of petroleum and accounted for more than 60 percent of Algeria’s total output. Petroleum is carried by pipeline to the ports of Bejaia and Arzew on the Mediterranean Sea. Some petroleum is refined at Hassi Messaoud.
