Class Mentor

 

(klassnyi nastavnik), in prerevolutionary Russia a teacher at a Gymnasium or Realschule who was charged with the upbringing of the pupils and with supervising their conduct.

According to the Gymnasium Charter of 1864, each Gymnasium was to have two supervisors with a higher education: one for the lower grades and one for the higher. The Gymnasium Charter of 1871 and the Realschule Charter of 1872 established the post of class mentor (one for each class group). The duties of the class mentor had to be carried out by staff teachers, who were paid supplemental wages for the work. The post of assistant class mentor was also established: the class supervisor (klassnyi nadziratel’)
