Central Pacific Basin

 

a basin in the Pacific Ocean, bounded by the Marshall Islands, the Ellice Islands, and the Gilbert Islands on the west and by the Line Islands Ridge on the east. Area, 5.7 million sq km; maximum depth, 6,957 m. The floor of the Central Pacific Basin is an abyssal plain. Isolated sea-mounts, such as Vitiaz’ Seamount (814 m), and seamount chains of volcanic origin, which include Titov Seamount, rise above the floor. The sediments are mainly red clay and radiolarian ooze.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Central Pacific Hurricane Center (CPHC) predicts a 70 percent chance that activity during the 2010 Typhoon Season will be below normal in the Central Pacific basin. Each season, the West and Central Pacific region experiences 31 typhoons on average, about half of which have the potential to cause severe destruction.
