Fijian

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Central Pacific *voce, from Proto-Oceanic *pose, from Proto-Eastern Malayo-Polynesian *bose, from Proto-Central-Eastern Malayo-Polynesian *bəsay, from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *bəʀsay.

Verb

[edit]

voce (transitive vocea or vocera) (intransitive)

  1. to paddle, to row (to propel a boat through water with oars)
    Era voce tiko ena waqa.
They are paddling/rowing in the boat.
  2. to paddle, to row (a boat) [vocea]
    Au vocea na waqa.
    I paddle/row the boat.
  3. to paddle to (a place) [vocera]
    Keimami vocera ki Beqa.
    We paddled to Beqa.

Usage notes

[edit]
  • The transitive form vocea takes the boat as its direct object, while vocera takes the destination as its object.
  • Traditionally, Fijians paddle facing the bow using a single oar without a rowlock, unlike the European custom of rowing with two oars while facing the stern.

Derived terms

[edit]
  • ivocevoce (paddle, oar; propeller blade)
  • vakalutu ivoce (canoe song sung in rhythm with paddling) (archaic, chiefly Yasawa)
