  1. (mathematics) A surface generated by a closed curve (especially a circle) rotating about, but not intersecting or containing, an axis in its own plane.
    Hyponyms: toroid (torus sense), torus
    1. A ring-shaped solid object whose surface is a torus.
    • 2010 February, Christine M. Livoti, and Jeffrey R. Morgan, “Self-Assembly and Tissue Fusion of Toroid-Shaped Minimal Building Units”, in Tissue Engineering Part A[1], volume 16, number 9:
Toroid and lumen diameter were easily controlled by micromold design, and toroid thickness was controlled by seeding density. When harvested, toroids' were stable, but underwent predictable changes over time with their lumens narrowing.
    • 2013 September, Yongju Kim, Wen Li, Suyong Shin, Myongsoo Lee, “Development of Toroidal Nanostructures by Self-Assembly: Rational Designs and Applications”, in Accounts of Chemical Research[2], volume 46, number 12:
However, because of the lack of guiding principles for the construction of toroids, researchers have not widely studied the self-assembly of toroidal nanostructures as compared with the work on other supramolecular architectures.
