[edit]From Old Norse tafl, from Latin tabula. Cognate with Faroese talv. First attested in Norwegian by Christen Jensøn in 1646 spelled as Taul. Thomas Bloch in his glossary of Fyresdal dialect from 1698 gives translation as card game, but it may be an error, since it is not attested anywhere else.
