tarmo
Appearance
Finnish
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Uncertain, but cognate with Karelian tarmo and also related to Northern Sami dárbmu. Earlier connected with Proto-Finno-Ugric *tärmä (compare Eastern Khanty тӓрәм (tärəm), Eastern Mansi те̄рыӈ (tēryň)),[1] but the phonological comparison is not exactly regular. Has also been compared with Old Norse þarmr (whence Swedish tarm (“intestine, gut, bowels”)), but the semantic gap makes this dubious.
