Etymology

[edit]

Borrowed from English Swati (the Swati language), with English ⟨w⟩ adapted as Norwegian ⟨v⟩.

The English name is ultimately from either Swazi siSwati (the Swati language) or emaSwati (the Swati people), the singular of the latter being liSwati (a Swati person). These forms contain the noun-class prefixes si- (class 7 prefix), ema- (class 6 prefix) and li- (class 5 prefix), attached to the stem -Swati, which is based on the royal name Mswati.[1] Doublet of swazi (member of the Swati people).

The spelling svati was officially standardized for both Bokmål and Nynorsk by Språkrådet on 24 February 2021.[2]

Compare Norwegian Nynorsk svati.
