Usage notes
[edit]When used in reference a Southeastern region, without further qualification, this word is written capitalized: Sudeste, região Sudeste. In all other uses, including in phrases such as sudeste brasileiro, sudeste do Brasil, the lowercase spelling is used.[1] In Portugal, under the Orthographic Agreement of 1945, the capitalized spelling was always employed when used in reference to a region, regardless of whether the name of a country was specified.
