[edit]From earlier *kimbiró (“bird”), from *kVmb- (“wing”). Compare Qimant ካምቢ (kambi, “wing”). Perhaps related to Proto-Semitic *kanap- (“wing”), whence Amharic ክንፍ (kənf).
Cognate with Rendille chimbir, Aweer shimir, Oromo simbirroo, Afar kimbiró.
