Derived from Proto-Cushitic *kefc- (spotted cat). Compare Beja kafa.

Cognate with Maay shaweel, Jiiddu shuul, Baiso kebel, Sidamo kewelcho, Hadiyya kabeera, Yaaku ch'epen, and Afar kabqi, Saho qabica. In Southern Nilotic, compare Nandi cheplanget.
