putki

From Wiktionary, the free dictionary

Finnish

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Finnic *pucki (compare Estonian putk, Votic putki), from Proto-Uralic *pučke (hollow plant stalk) (compare Northern Sami boska (angelica), Erzya почко (počko, roll, coil), Tundra Nenets пуд (pūd)). The development from hollow plant stalk to pipe, tube is difficult to date precisely, as some similar meanings are also found in other Finnic languages (although plant-related senses dominate).

  • Rhymes: -utki
  • Syllabification(key): put‧ki
