[edit]According to Ramón Menéndez Pidal, borrowed from Portuguese or Galician payo, from Portuguese or Galician Pelayo, from Latin Pelagius, so of the same origin as the Spanish name Pelayo and related to piélago (“sea (poetic term)”).[1]
