Literally, shortly before narrowly. Aliterative formation, probably an alteration of such phrases as kurz vor Schluss or kurz vor zwölf.

  1. (colloquial) just in time, at the last minute, at the eleventh hour (extremely shortly before a deadline, planned event or expected consequence)
    Synonyms: gerade noch, auf den letzten Drücker
    Ich habe die Unterlagen eine halbe Stunde vor Ende der Frist eingereicht, das war wirklich kurz vor knapp.
    I sent in the documents half an hour before the deadline ended, I really barely made it just in time.
