[edit]From Proto-Somaloid *ice, from Proto-Cushitic *ʔisi (“she”), from Proto-Afroasiatic *si (“she, he, it”).
Cognate with Maay iyé, Aweer ii, Rendille iche, Jiiddu isé, Oromo ishee, Afar is, Sidamo ise.
