From Old Danish gripæ, from Old Norse grípa (to grab), from Proto-Germanic *grīpaną, from Proto-Indo-European *gʰreyb- (to grasp, grab). Cognate with Swedish gripa, Norwegian Bokmål gripe, Icelandic grípa, English gripe, West Frisian gripe, Low German griepen, Dutch grijpen, German greifen.
