From Proto-Cushitic *t’iir-/*-t’-r- (to be tall, long, high), from Proto-Afroasiatic *t'eer- (long). Unrelated to Iraqw tleer (long) (from Proto-South Cushitic *tleed- (long, tall), from Proto-Afroasiatic *tl’̌-z- (tall, high)).

Cognate with Maay dheer, Rendille dheer, Jiiddu dhiiré, Baiso -'eer, Oromo dheeraa, Afar xer.
