Etymology

From Proto-Vietic *cuːʔ, from Proto-Austroasiatic *cuʔ (grandchild). Cognate with Muong [Bi] chảu (son-in-law), Khmer ចៅ (caw), Bahnar sŏu/sâu, Pacoh achau, Khasi 'siew.

Attested as cháu in the Dictionarium Annamiticum Lusitanum et Latinum (1651).
