Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Cushitic *caanrab- (“tongue”). The first element may be preserved as can (“inner buccal”) and is found in Southern Cushitic; Kw'adza ondalimo (“tongue”), Mbugu lu'anda (“tongue”), Dahalo ʕééna (“tongue”). The second element is of uncertain origin.
Cognate with Maay arrab, Garre arrab, Aweer arub, Rendille h'arrab, Jiiddu arnaw, Baiso erreb, Daasanach erbu plural of ere, El Molo errep, Oromo arraba, Konso arrapa, Afar arraabá, Burji arraba, Hadiyya allabo, Kambaata arrabita, Sidamo arraba, Yaaku erepa plural of ere, Tsamai arrafko.
