Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Old Galician-Portuguese buxeta, from Vulgar Latin *buxita, from Late Latin buxis, borrowed from Ancient Greek πυξίς (puxís, box), from πῠ́ξος (pŭ́xos, boxwood) + -ῐς (-ĭs, feminine suffix).[1] Doublet of boate and bússola. For the semantic development, compare English box (vagina).
