    Etymology

    [edit]

Internationalism, based on English Swaziland, from Swazi (Swazi) +‎ land (country, territory). English Swazi is ultimately from Swazi Mswati, the regnal name of Mswati II, after whom the Swazi people came to be named.

The English ethnonym may have been transmitted through a neighbouring Nguni form such as Zulu iSwazi. Mswati II greatly expanded and consolidated the kingdom during the nineteenth century. The deeper etymology of the personal name Mswati is uncertain.

Compare Norwegian Nynorsk Swaziland, Danish Swaziland, Swedish Swaziland, German Swasiland and English Swaziland.

      • 2008 October 29, Østlandets Blad:
inntektene fra arrangementet skal utelukkende gå til barn i fadderbyen Mbabane i Swaziland
the proceeds from the event are to go exclusively to children in the partner city of Mbabane in Swaziland

    Usage notes

    [edit]
    • Until 19 April 2018, the Norwegian short name of the country was Swaziland, with the full state name Kongeriket Swaziland. The corresponding current names are Eswatini and Kongeriket Eswatini.
    • Swaziland is now historical, but remains appropriate when referring to the country before the name change.
